Building Decks Above Code
Deck collapse is a major issue in Massachusetts and the Worcester area. This is often caused by improper fastening of the deck to the house. Also, there are major risks to children as the deck ages and railings or ballusters become loose.
That’s why our guiding philosophy is to build our decks in Worcester County at or above all local codes and national standards.

What Materials For a Deck Near Worcester?
The choice of deck material is a tough decision, but also the most important decision you will make about your deck. In this short guide, we will walk you through the most common materials for deck from surface to railings to sub-structure.
Common Deck Boards in Worcester.
The first place to start when deciding deck materials is the deck boards. All standard deck boards will be 5/4 inches thick by 6 inches wide, but there is a variety of materials to choose from.
Pressure Treated Lumber
The most common deck material in the Worcester area (Auburn, Shrewsbury, etc) is pressure treated wood. This is standard lumber that has been treated with various chemicals to make it insect and weather resistant. The average life of pressure treated wood exposed regularly to the elements is around 20 years. Though this can be shorter or longer depending on how well you maintain your new deck.
While pressure treated is the lowest cost option available, it does take more maintenance and effort throughout the life of the deck. This includes pressure washing it yearly and staining it every few years.
If you aren’t interested in the extra maintenance, then you might consider composite deck boards.
Composite Deck Boards
There are a few major brands of Composite Deck Boards to choose from. The most popular composite deck material that we install is Trex brand which comes in a few different color options.
The primary benefit of Trex composite deck boards is it doesn’t rot and comes with a very long 25 year warranty against fading and staining. But, those benefits means composite deck boards are substantially more expensive.
Composite deck boards generally come in two varieties – one with hidden fasteners and the other with screws on the surface similar to the way pressure treated is installed.
What Materials For the Railings?
Just like with the deck boards, the most common material for railings is pressure treated lumber. It’s the most cost effective but also requires the additional maintenance that all pressure treated decks require. Another consideration is splinters that all wood inevitably has which can be a consideration especially if there are children.
Vinyl Railings for your Deck.
Vinyl doesn’t work well in the extreme southern sun or the extreme northern cold. But fortunately for the residents of Worcester County, vinyl works well year-round in our area. That’s why the most common alternative to pressure treated railings is vinyl railings. Vinyl holds up really well in both Massachusetts summers and winters and has a very long life time with limited fading and cracking.
White railings and balusters give a nice accent to whatever color you choose for your deck boards and give that “pop” that many people are looking for. Alternatively you can choose while railings and black balusters which also give a great finished look.
Alternatively, there area wide variety of metal and aluminum railings to choose from as well for your new deck, but most are custom orders.
Deck Board Orientation
There area few ways to install and orient the deck boards on your deck. If your deck is under 16 feet wide, generally one layer of deck boards will be installed that runs parallel in orientation to your house wall.
If the deck is wider, then there are two options for installation. The easiest and cheapest option is to just stagger the deck boards sort of like a hardwood floor would look. Alternatively, a couple vertical deck boards can be installed in the middle of the deck to create two separate sections of the deck.
Deck boards can also be installed on various angles for all sorts of aesthetic results.
Deck Board Picture Frame
There are two methods for the edge of the deck as well – run the deck boards straight to the edge and cut the ends, or to do a ‘picture frame’. The most visually appealing deck option is the picture frame appearance.
